How do I keep my kids safe on things like Wii connect? Is it something to be concerned about?

Nintendo takes safety pretty seriously. So the Wii is probably the safest online gaming system out there. Here is my suggestions about connecting your Wii Console to the internet:


  • Use The Wii Parental Controls

    Put limits on the browser, messaging and other online communication. Check out Nintendo's website to see how to set them up on the Wii.

  • Check Age & Ratings

    When you browse through games on their site, you can narrow the search by age. Keep in mind your child's maturity level when doing this. And check the game to make sure the rating suits your kids.

  • Check For "Chat"

    I searched their games for chat features. It came back with 25 hits ranging from Tetris Party Deluxe to The Godfather: Blackhand Edition. Out of its 1500 games, 25 isn't much, but it's always good to know when your kids can chat through online games.

  • Take Their Suggestions

    Read their "Important Privacy Information". At the bottom of the page, they list some dangers with storing personal info on Wii remotes and consoles. Plus they have more tips for keeping your children safe, like checking game reviews and playing with your kids to see what they are doing.


    And remember - the standard internet safety rules apply to everything you use on the web. Don't give out phone numbers, IM names, last names, birth dates, all that stuff.
